Position Summary:
The Computer Support Specialist is responsible for providing
technical support and assistance to end-users at Arkansas Tech.
This role involves troubleshooting, maintaining, and upgrading
hardware and software systems to ensure the efficient operation of
desktop computers, lab computers, thin clients, laptops, and
peripherals. The Computer Support Specialist plays a crucial role
in ensuring that all students, faculty, and staff have the
necessary tools and resources to be successful at Arkansas Tech
University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide second-level technical support for hardware, software, and
network-related issues, either in person, over the phone, or via
remote access tools.
Install, configure, and maintain desktop and laptop computers, thin
clients, printers, and other peripheral devices.
Diagnose and resolve hardware and software problems, including
operating system issues, application errors, and connectivity
problems.
Collaborate with other IT professionals to escalate complex issues
and ensure timely resolution.
Assist in the procurement and inventory management of IT equipment
and peripherals.
Maintain and update documentation related to IT processes,
troubleshooting procedures, and hardware/software inventory.
Conduct routine system updates, patches, and security
enhancements.
Educate end-users on basic IT best practices and offer training
when necessary.
Monitor and manage antivirus and security software.
Assist with data backup and recovery procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A strong understanding of desktop and laptop hardware and software
components.
Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and familiarity with macOS and
Linux operating systems.
Basic knowledge of networking concepts and protocols.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Time management and multitasking abilities.
Knowledge of remote access tools for providing off-site
support.
Familiarity with ticketing systems for issue tracking and
resolution.
Physical dexterity for equipment setup and maintenance.
Minimum Requirements:
Associate's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or
related field (or equivalent work experience).
Basic knowledge of computer hardware and software.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Customer service experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or
a related field.
Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or
Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST).
Experience with Active Directory, Group Policy, and domain
management.
Familiarity with ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure
Library) principles.
Experience with mobile device management (MDM) solutions.
Familiarity with remote desktop software for remote support.
Proven experience in a desktop support or IT technician role.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:
An ability to sit or stand for long periods.
Ability to successfully manipulate devices for data entry during
those periods. Ability to view computer screens for long
periods.
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in non-verbal
communication.
Ability to arrive at work on time, if not early, and stay late as
the situation dictates. Off-hour work may be required.
The actual work location may be physically on campus in an office
environment, possibly shared or at an approved remote location.
Must be able to be contacted as needed and respond accordingly.
Ensure the ability to travel as necessary by driving, riding,
flying, or other public transportation systems, both in and out of
the State.
Successful completion of a criminal background check is
required.
