Department/Unit Summary
A Dialysis Nurse in a hospital is a specialized Registered Nurse
(RN) who provides critical care to patients with acute or chronic
kidney failure. They play a vital role in administering dialysis
treatments, a life-sustaining procedure that removes toxins, excess
fluids, and waste from the blood when the kidneys can no longer
function properly.
In a hospital setting, dialysis nurses care for patients with
severe kidney conditions, including those in critical care,
post-surgical recovery, or undergoing emergency dialysis due to
sudden kidney failure. They operate and monitor dialysis machines,
assess patients before, during, and after treatments, manage
complications such as low blood pressure or fluid imbalances, and
ensure infection control measures are strictly followed.
Beyond technical skills, dialysis nurses provide education and
emotional support to patients and their families, helping them
understand the dialysis process, dietary restrictions, and
long-term care plans. They collaborate with nephrologists,
